Podcasting is becoming more popular each day. But have you ever wondered who was the first podcaster?
Podcasting is everywhere: there are more than 150,000 shows available on the internet. An estimated one-third of Americans listen to them at least once a month. But have you ever wondered who was the first podcaster?
Pioneers of Podcasting
The idea of listening to a sound program wherever and whenever you want has been around for more than 30 years. It all started in the 1990s as audio blogging and internet radio. Or, as some people would call it, “asynchronous radio”.
Those shows were not “real” podcasting. The technology to download new episodes automatically didn’t exist yet. This is a key differentiator for podcasts.
A notable example is that of the technologist Carl Malamud. In 1993, he launched the first “computer-radio” talk show. Each week, a different guest would provide insight into computers. He distributed his audio files through the web and listeners would fetch them one by one.
Some other sites allowed you to download shows to your computer. For example, AOL.com launched in 1996 an uncensored comedy program called The Dan & Scott Show.
Technology Behind Podcasting
The first systems for selecting and downloading seriated sound files came in 2000. Most of them perished after the dot-com crash. At the same time, broadband internet and portable digital audio devices became popular.
In October 2000, Tristan Louis came up with the idea to attach audio and video files to an RSS feed. What this means is that users would be able to keep track of their favorite shows without difficulty.
Adam Curry and David Winer were the first people to implement this idea. Thus, they are credited as the inventors of the technology behind podcasting.
Who was the first podcaster?
The first podcaster ever was Doug Caye. He was the first person to share his show through an RSS feed with enclosures. He called his show IT conversations. It lasted from 2003 to 2012 and consisted of interviews with computer experts.
Why did podcasting become so popular?
Podcasting has become popular because it is accessible. You can listen to them while driving to work or while cooking dinner. When you listen to a candid conversation, it becomes easy to empathize with the host. Podcasting is a matter of bonding with other people.
